Mumbai: A fire broke out at a ground-plus-one-storey labour camp at Tata Nagar on Navghar Road in Mulund East on Thursday afternoon, with around seven gas cylinders exploding in the incident. No one was injured in the incident. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established. A senior fire official said the circumstances leading to the reported cylinder explosions were also being investigated.Around 200-300 workers were believed to be at the site when the fire broke out. All were safely evacuated. The camp houses workers engaged in the construction of BMC’s Project Affected Persons (PAP) housing project, which envisages 7,439 homes. The project is expected to accommodate families displaced from Dharavi, besides housing private buildings that are not part of the PAP scheme.Fire personnel remained at the site even after the blaze was brought under control, cooling the area and checking for any residual hazards.BJP corporator Prakash Gangadhare, who visited the spot, said he suspected the fire may have originated from a rubber gas pipe. “I found the circumstances suspicious and the possibility of the fire starting from the rubber pipe needs to be investigated,” he said.Locals said the workers would be temporarily shifted from the site until the premises were cleared, cleaned and declared safe.
