68 lives lost on Mizoram roads in 8 months

Aizawl: Mizoram Police registered 69 cases related to road accidents between Jan and Aug this year, according to information provided by state police officials on Sunday.Of the 69 cases registered during the eight-month period, 62 involved deaths, five involved serious injuries, one involved a minor injury and one involved no injuries.Separately, state police records show that road accidents during the period claimed 68 lives. Eighteen people suffered serious injuries and 22 sustained minor injuries, taking the total number of people affected to 108.The figures indicate that the casualty count was not limited to the cases formally registered by the police. However, the information available does not explain the difference between the case-wise breakdown and the separate casualty figures.The Aizawl Traffic Police Media Cell urged vehicle owners and drivers to use their vehicles responsibly and exercise utmost caution.It warned that negligence by drivers, other vehicle users and pedestrians could lead to loss of life within moments and cause lifelong disabilities.The traffic police appealed to all road users to remain alert and cautious to help prevent accidents and loss of life.
