63 green bus drivers’ licences cancelled for flouting rules: Police

Guwahati: The Kamrup (Metropolitan) Regional Transport Authority has decided to take action against Assam State Transport Corporation’s green buses for repeated flouting of rules by the bus drivers.Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah said disciplinary action was taken according to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Board’s directives against the drivers, including cancellation of their licences.“According to the rules under the Motor Vehicles Act, as per procedure, 63 driving licences of green bus drivers have already been cancelled by the enforcement branch of the DTO,” the DCP said.Borah said stricter enforcement will follow, with bus drivers and conductors found violating traffic rules to be fined and their buses seized for seven days.He further said city buses must maintain lane discipline and stay in the left lane. If a bus approaches another bus already stationed at a stop, it must not overtake by switching lanes. Any violation of this rule will result in the bus being taken off the road.Over the past few days, green buses have been in the spotlight for a series of accidents. On Saturday, two people were killed after being run over by a green bus on MG Road. Another accident occurred in the Pan Bazar area, where authorities said the bus deviated from its designated route before the incident.Kamrup (Metro) district commissioner and RTA chairperson Swapneel Paul said the matter was taken up and ASTC has been asked to ensure a balanced deployment of the green buses across operational routes.
