Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to redesign and improve 600 road junction curves (bellmouths) across the city to ease traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety. As part of the first phase, improvement work is already underway at 94 key road junction curves at an estimated cost of ₹3 crore and are scheduled to be completed by July 15.GCC commissioner G S Sameeran said they are seeking union govt’s urban challenge fund. “The DPR is being prepared for the rest of the work. We hope to get a funding for a first batch of 200 bellmouths, and we will finish it in two months,” he said. The commissioner said they will consult the public on the other stretches that need to be fixed. “Curves require better pavements and visibility,” the commissioner said. When there are no pavements on curves, those walking on the opposite side of traffic step down onto the road and face the risk of getting hit by vehicles.GCC maintains 488 bus route roads stretching 418.56km and 35,978 interior roads extending 5,653.89km across the city. The project covers major intersections across 15 zones where corporation roads merge with national highways, state highways, and city bus route roads.Under the ongoing first phase, work has been taken up at several locations, including junctions along EVR Road such as Tailors Road, Flowers Road, New Avadi Road, Vasu Street, Alagappa Road, Dr Nair Road and Gengu Reddy subway road, besides Ashok Nagar 10th Avenue junction, P T Rajan Road junction, Sardar Patel Road–Canal Road junction, Thiruvanmiyur junction, MKB Nagar Road junction, Dams Road junction, Ritherdon Road junction and Vepery Road–EVK Road junction.
