Chennai: A 60-year-old man and his teenage grandson drowned in Narayanapuram lake in Pallikaranai on Friday morning.The deceased have been identified as Perumal, 60, a resident of Sengeni Amman Koil Street, Pallikaranai and his grandson Bharath, 15, a Class X student. Another grandson, Dinesh, 14, a Class IX student, who accompanied them did not enter the water.According to the police, the boys came to stay with their grandfather as schools had recently closed for summer vacation. On Friday morning, with temperatures soaring, Perumal took them to the nearby Narayanapuram lake for a bath.Dinesh sat on the bank while Perumal and Bharath got into the lake. Bharath ventured into a deeper section of the water body and began struggling to stay afloat. Seeing this, Perumal rushed to rescue him, but both drowned.Dinesh, who witnessed the incident from the shore, raised an alarm, alerting nearby locals to attempt a rescue. Despite their efforts, they were unable to save the duo. Personnel from the Medavakkam fire and rescue services department arrived at the spot and launched a search operation. The bodies was recovered on Friday afternoon. The Pallikaranai police sent the bodies to Tambaram GH for postmortem examination.
