Guwahati: Railway authorities demolished around 60 houses allegedly built illegally on railway land in Bamunimaidam on Monday.The drive was led by railway police with assistance from Assam Police and central security forces. Residents resisted, with some standing in front of excavators.Officials said notices were served on residents, asking them to vacate by Aug 21. The deadline was later extended by three days, but authorities proceeded with the demolition after the families failed to leave.Residents said they sought more time, arguing that the short notice left them little time to find accommodation and move their belongings. They highlighted the difficulties faced by families with school-going children, who would have nowhere to return to after classes.Some residents questioned plans to develop a garden on the cleared land, citing existing bathroom tanks and other structures. They urged authorities to address the plight of the displaced families first.
