Pune: A garbage collection vehicle operating for the Pimpri Chinchwad civic body on Monday afternoon ran over a five-year-old girl after hitting a parked motorcycle in Nigdi, causing the two-wheeler to topple over her.Police said Sanskruti Bhagwat Biradar was playing near her home in Audumbar Society, Sainathnagar, around 12.15pm when the accident occurred. The garbage collection vehicle first hit the motorcycle, which slipped off its stand and fell on the child. After Sanskruti lost balance and fell, the van ran over her.Senior inspector Mahesh Bansode of the Nigdi police said the girl suffered severe injuries in the accident. She was taken to a private hospital in Nigdi, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. “We have seized the vehicle and detained its driver and cleaner,” he said.“We got to know during investigation that the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had given the contract for garbage collection to a private firm. Prima facie probe indicated that the man at the wheel of the garbage van was driving recklessly. We are in the process of registering a case of causing death due to negligence,” Bansode said.The officer said the girl’s father ran a ‘bhel’ stall and her mother was a homemaker. “We are yet to record their statements,” he said.
