Silchar: Dimasa history will take centre stage as Dima Hasao prepares to celebrate a 450-year-old royal legacy.The North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) has announced initiatives to promote the community’s language, culture and socio-economic development, alongside a commemorative programme at Maibang on Aug 12.Addressing the media in Haflong on Sunday, chief executive member Debolal Gorlosa said officials, council members and retired officials would visit villages monthly to raise awareness about Dimasa language, culture and education. Weekly discussions on Dimasa history, traditions and folk dances will also be organised.Gorlosa welcomed Assam govt’s decision to make Dimasa mandatory alongside English for official work in Dima Hasao, calling it a “historic step”. He thanked chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the initiative.He said Dimasa textbooks were introduced from Classes IV to XII, while Classes IX and X students were studying it as their mother tongue.Projects in education, healthcare, road connectivity, skill development, self-employment and infrastructure were being implemented to improve lives in the hill district, he said. He urged community organisations, intellectuals, senior citizens and youth to support inclusive development.Addressing recent controversies, Gorlosa said council decisions would follow constitutional provisions, the law and public interest. Peace, communal harmony and balanced development would remain its priority.The Aug 12 event will mark the 450th anniversary of the Dimasa kingdom and celebrate its rulers’ legacy. Gorlosa said their capitals were first at Dimapur and later at Maibang and Khaspur.
