Ahmedabad: Gujarat has a higher share of people using two-wheelers for daily travel than the national average, according to the National Statistics Office’s (NSO) “Household Travel in India” survey released on Monday.The survey showed that 39.7% of people in Gujarat used two-wheelers for ‘within travel day’ trips, compared with the national average of 32.2%. Gujarat ranked ninth among states in the use of two-wheelers. The findings reflect the relatively high presence of two-wheelers in Gujarat in proportion to its population.Mizoram recorded the highest share at 72.8%, while Punjab and Tamil Nadu were next, with 49.8% each.Gujarat also recorded higher-than-national-average use of cars and autorickshaws. However, the share of people using bicycles and buses in the state was below the national average.The survey also provided details on the time and money spent on travel for work and education. On average, a person in Gujarat takes about 23 minutes to reach the workplace, while the average travel time to an educational institution is about 20 minutes.The average travel cost was Rs 738 in rural areas and Rs 891 in urban areas.Among students in Gujarat, about 91% reached their educational institutions within 30 minutes whereas 0.1% reported travel time of 120-150 minutes.The survey said that 87.2% reported reaching their workplace within 30 minutes, while 10.5% took 30-60 minutes. Another 1.6% spent between 60 and 90 minutes travelling to work. The remaining 0.6% reported travel times of more than 90 minutes.The survey also examined the reasons for overnight trips. In Gujarat, the leading reason for such travel was “socialising, communication, and religious practices”.Experts said the findings could be viewed in the context of an overall increase in mobility in both rural and urban parts of Gujarat.
