4 student suicides since Feb: HHRC seeks report from NIT Kurukshetra

Chandigarh: Taking suo motu cognisance of four student suicides since Feb at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, the Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) has sought a detailed report from the district administration, police and institute management. It has asked them to submit details of the sequence of events prior to the suicides, signs of distress, and availability of counselling and mental health support on campus.It also directed officials to clarify whether standard procedures were followed and if any lapses occurred, while examining implementation of student welfare guidelines.The commission noted that educational institutions must ensure a safe and supportive environment, especially in high-pressure academic settings. Preliminary inputs point to a disturbing pattern. A first-year student also recently attempted suicide but was rescued, while a second-year student was found dead on April 16, triggering protests by fellow students.
