Hyderabad: Hundreds of commuters were caught off-guard on Saturday evening, after heavy traffic congestion brought several key roads at Tank Bund and the surrounding areas to a near standstill amid a series of events including visits of weekend crowds, a fireworks show and a scheduled candle-light rally on the stretch. From around 6 pm, long queues of vehicles were witnessed along the Hussainsagar–Necklace Road stretch, the secretariat, Lower Tank Bund, Raj Bhavan Road and MS Maqtha, Khairatabad, with traffic remaining heavily congested late into the night. The situation worsened on Raj Bhavan Road after police closed the Khairatabad flyover leading towards Hussainsagar as part of traffic arrangements for the rally. Vehicles were diverted through MS Maqtha, resulting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on roads lined with residential colonies.

“I usually reach Miyapur from Lakdikapul in about 35 minutes. Today, I have barely moved in over an hour. There was no clear diversion information until we were already stuck. It is already a weekend, and with a rally on top of it, better arrangements and diversions could have been made by the police,” said software professional K Ramesh, who was travelling home from work.“Despite deploying additional personnel and implementing diversions, the public response was much higher than anticipated, leading to unusually heavy congestion,” a senior traffic police officer added.
