Guwahati: The Assam cabinet on Friday approved a key amendment to the state’s land policy of 2019, making only those families that have been residing in the state for at least three generations eligible to be recognised as “landless persons” for allotment of govt land.This condition would not apply to people who migrated to Assam as refugees before March 24, 1971, provided they furnish valid documentary evidence.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the amendment seeks to redefine eligibility under the land settlement policy.Besides the land policy amendment, the cabinet also approved the revalidation of administrative approval worth Rs 474.25 crore for the construction of a four-lane flyover at Mission Chariali in Tezpur, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the town.The cabinet also approved the reconstitution of the Assam State Higher Education Council (ASHEC).In another decision concerning the education sector, the cabinet approved the permanent retention of posts created under the Assam Venture Educational Institutions (Provincialisation of Services) Act, 2011, as amended in 2013.
