AHMEDABAD: As part of the complete demolition work of the Subhash Bridge in Ahmedabad city, the demolition of 3 dilapidated spans located in the riverbed was completed on Wednesday. During the demolition, the entire span was broken down very carefully and lowered in a controlled manner. No untoward incident occurred during the entire operation, and complete safety was maintained for the workers, machinery and the surrounding area.This entire operation was carried out by the contractor under the supervision of experts. In addition, all prescribed safety standards and protocols were strictly followed along with continuous monitoring on-site, leading to the successful completion of the entire demolition process. During the demolition, the entire area of the bridge was completely barricaded and declared a restricted zone, and no person was allowed entry around the bridge. The entire operation was planned with safety as the highest priority. With the demolition work carried out on Wednesday, the safe demolition of a total of three spans of the old Subhash Bridge was completed. In the next phase, the remaining work will also be undertaken in accordance with the set plan, following all safety parameters. Furthermore, the work of debris removal has also started.It is worth mentioning that Subhash Bridge was constructed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 1973. The length of the bridge is 453.75 metres and the width is 12.85 metres. On Dec 4, 2025, Subhash Bridge was urgently closed to traffic after cracks were reported. The foundation was inspected along with the bridge’s superstructure. Experts from IIT Roorkee and IIT Bombay, along with SVNIT, were consulted for this entire inspection work. Various options regarding repairing the Subhash Bridge and constructing a new bridge were discussed. The state govt subsequently approved the AMC’s plan to repair Subhash Bridge and construct two new river bridges. The Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner held a news conference to announce the restoration of Subhash Bridge and the construction of two new parallel bridges.The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation floated a tender for the restoration of Subhash Bridge and the construction of new 2-2 lane bridges on both sides of the Subhash Bridge in two phases at a cost of Rs 236 crore. A tender worth Rs 236 crore was approved. According to the tender, the restoration work of the old Subhash Bridge was initially planned to be completed within the first nine months.However, inspection work on the old Subhash Bridge was recently conducted again, during which cracks were found in the bridge’s pillars. Consequently, it has now been decided to demolish the old Subhash Bridge completely, and the process of demolishing the old bridge has commenced accordingly.Notably, Subhash Bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since Dec 4, 2025. As a result, traffic congestion has worsened at the RTO Circle, the Riverfront Road located on the eastern part of the Sabarmati Riverfront, and the Vadaj Circle. The Subhash Bridge has remained closed to traffic for the last 6 months.
