Dibrugarh: Two persons were injured after a wild buffalo strayed into agricultural fields and attacked them at Naojan village in Khowang on Saturday, triggering panic among residents.The injured were identified as Bharat Saikia, 48, and Sarat Saikia, 51, both residents of Naojan village.Local residents said the two men had gone to alert a group of women who were transplanting paddy saplings in a nearby field after the buffalo was spotted emerging from a forested patch close to the cultivation area. As they tried to move people to safety, the animal charged at them, leaving both men injured.They were first taken to Tiloi community health centre. Doctors later referred them to Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, for advanced treatment.“We saw the buffalo coming out of the bushes and ran to warn the women working in the field. Before we could get everyone to safety, it charged at us,” one of the injured men said from hospital.Forest department personnel were informed soon after the incident and rushed to the spot. Officials said forest guards fired seven rounds in the air to drive the animal away.However, the buffalo moved to another nearby field and was believed to be sheltering there till late Saturday. Villagers have been asked to avoid the fields and not approach the animal.Forest officials said efforts were on to guide the buffalo back towards the forest.
