Varanasi: Two men were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly attacking a police team that had gone to serve notices to meat and fish shop owners to shut their establishments along the kanwariya route during Shrawan. The accused allegedly assaulted policemen, tore a sub-inspector’s uniform and snatched his badge and nameplate during the Aug 1 incident in Mughalsarai area of Chandauli.The Chandauli administration has banned the sale of meat and fish along the Kanwar routes during the holy month of Shrawan.According to a complaint lodged by Dulhipur outpost in-charge Sanjay Kumar Singh, he, constable Balkrishna Yadav and woman constable Mohit Yadav had reached the area on the evening of Aug 1 to serve notices to meat and fish sellers along the kanwariya routes. Police alleged that meat trader Prince Sonkar obstructed official work and assaulted the personnel.When Singh tried to intervene and rescue his team members, Prince allegedly abused and manhandled him. Police alleged that members of the Sonkar family and their supporters, who are involved in the meat and fish trade, tore the sub-inspector’s uniform and snatched his badge and nameplate.CO (PDDU Nagar) Arun Kumar Singh said that after the police detained Prince and started taking him to the outpost, his relatives and others gathered and attacked the police team again.The CO said an FIR was registere dagainst Prince, Gautam Sonkar, Abhishek, Amarjeet, Chhotu, Prince’s mother, sister and father Ramesh Sonkar, along with four unidentified persons, under relevant sections. Following the incident, all the accused went absconding, he said.He added that two of the accused — Prince Sonkar (26) and Amarjeet Sonkar (24) — were arrested on Tuesday, while police teams are carrying out raids to nab the remaining accused.
