2 held for ₹16L ‘digital arrest’ scam targeting elderly woman

Panchkula: Panchkula police have arrested two members of a cyber fraud gang for allegedly duping an elderly woman of Rs 16 lakh through a “digital arrest” scam.According to the Cyber Crime police station, the victim complained that fraudsters posing as Mumbai crime branch officials claimed a parcel sent in her name to Iran contained drugs, fake passports and illegal bank cards. They allegedly threatened her with a money laundering case and kept her under constant surveillance through phone and video calls for several days.Fearing arrest and social stigma, the woman transferred Rs 16 lakh to multiple bank accounts.DCP (crime and traffic) Amrinder Singh said investigations revealed that Rs 5 lakh of the defrauded amount was transferred to an SBI account belonging to Gopal Saran, a resident of Bikaner, who had allegedly sold the account to Pramod Godara for monetary gain.Acting on technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, police arrested Gopal Saran (26) and Pramod Godara (23).Police said efforts are under way to trace the absconding kingpin of the racket and other account holders suspected to be involved in the fraud. Raids are being conducted at multiple locations as investigations continue.
