Chandigarh: A Chandigarh court has ordered community service for two men who pleaded guilty in a drunken driving case after allegedly misbehaving with a woman traffic marshal and police personnel during a late-night checking drive.The accused, Lovejot Singh (26) and Gaganpreet Singh (27), residents of Samrala in Ludhiana, were stopped at an anti-drunk driving naka on the dividing road of sectors 34 and 35 on the intervening night of July 4 and 5. According to the traffic police, Lovejot Singh was driving the vehicle when it was stopped for checking. A breath analyser test allegedly found his blood alcohol level at 238 mg per 100 ml, significantly above the permissible limit of 30 mg per 100 ml. When asked to produce the vehicle documents, the occupants allegedly refused to cooperate, declined to disclose their identities and misbehaved with woman traffic marshal Sukhjeet Kaur and other personnel on duty.Police said a PCR vehicle and staff from Sector 36 police station were called to the spot. The accused allegedly also misbehaved with the responding police personnel. The vehicle was subsequently impounded and legal proceedings initiated.During court proceedings before Chief Judicial Magistrate Sachin Yadav, the accused pleaded guilty. The court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and directed them to perform community service for two hours a day over four days by assisting traffic police at designated intersections to promote road-safety awareness. The court also ordered suspension of the driver’s licence for three months. The case before the SDM has been adjourned to September 16.
