Rajkot: Rajkot Civil Hospital achieved a remarkable medical milestone by successfully conducting the delivery of a pregnant woman who weighed 180kg, which doctors say is the heaviest maternity case in the hospital’s history.Kailash Parmar (35) from Timbi village in Amreli district’s Jafrabad taluka, was admitted on July 16 with breathing difficulties. According to Dr Kamal Goswami, head of the gynecology department, the case posed significant challenges due to her weight and related health risks.“While we regularly handle pregnancies involving women weighing around 100 kg, this was unprecedented. The patient’s BMI was 65, nearly double the normal range, making the pregnancy and delivery highly risky,” Dr Goswami said.Recognizing the complexity of the case, the hospital assembled two specialist teams comprising eight doctors, including gynecologists, anaesthetists and physicians. The patient was initially admitted to the ICU, where comprehensive medical evaluations were conducted. Although her reports were normal, doctors began preventive treatment to minimize the risk of blood clots, which could have caused serious complications affecting the heart and other organs.Senior gynecologists Dr. Mehul Parmar and Dr Jalpa Rathod said special arrangements were made for the patient’s care. A customized maternity bed was arranged to accommodate her, while the operation theatre was equipped with larger instruments and a suitable surgical table in case a caesarean section became necessary.Blood units were kept on standby and doctors inserted a central venous line to ensure reliable medical access, anticipating difficulties with conventional intravenous procedures. Continuous sonography support was also arranged to closely monitor the baby’s condition throughout labour.Doctors induced labor on July 29 and maintained round-the-clock monitoring. Despite concerns that complications might require emergency surgery, Kailash delivered her baby at around 2.30am on Thursday through a normal delivery process.After the birth, medical and technical staff continued intensive monitoring and medication to ensure the stability of mother and child.Expressing her happiness after the successful birth of her fourth child, Kailash credited the doctors and staff for saving her life.“I am alive today because of the efforts and dedication of all the doctors and hospital staff. I am grateful to everyone who cared for me,” she said. Her husband works in Amreli.Hospital officials described the case as a testament to the expertise, planning and teamwork of Rajkot Civil Hospital’s medical professionals in managing one of the most challenging maternity cases ever encountered at the institution.
