Varanasi: An 11-year-old boy underwent 50 stitches after a dog attacked him inside the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus on Thursday morning, leaving him with serious head and facial injuries. He was admitted to the BHU Trauma Centre in critical condition. His family has sought a high-level inquiry into the incident and demanded that CCTV footage from the area be secured.The injured child is the son of Prema Ram Chaudhary, a senior nursing officer at the Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU. Chaudhary lives with his wife and two sons in Jodhpur Colony on the BHU campus.According to the father, he had gone for a morning walk around 7 am with both his sons. His elder son was walking about 200 metres ahead, while the younger son was with him. After covering some distance, Chaudhary asked the younger child to return home, while he went ahead to bring back his elder son.As the child was returning home, about 400-500 metres away, a dog allegedly attacked him. When he reached home, he learnt that his younger son had been injured in the dog attack and had been taken to the BHU Trauma Centre by local residents.The child’s father has submitted a written complaint to the BHU administration, demanding a high-level inquiry into the incident. He has also requested that CCTV footage from around the spot be preserved immediately to help establish the facts.Meanwhile, the BHU administration said it has taken cognisance of the incident and described it as unfortunate and distressing.The chief proctor’s office is investigating the matter. According to the BHU spokesperson, necessary action is being taken in coordination with the Estate Office regarding animal-related issues on the campus. The safety and convenience of campus residents remain the administration’s top priorities.The spokesperson added that a policy for the management, registration and vaccination of animals on the campus had already been notified and is being implemented.
