100-day cleanliness drive in Gujarat: Crackdown on single-use plastic nets ₹1.2cr in fines

Gandhinagar: Authorities implementing the 100-day cleanliness campaign across the state have collected around Rs 1.2 crore in fines during the drive against single-use plastic and cleared 2,918 of the 4,143 identified garbage-vulnerable points, according to a state govt review released on Tuesday. The campaign, launched across municipal corporations and municipalities in Sept, aims to improve visible cleanliness, ensure door-to-door waste collection, and strengthen waste segregation at source. The state has also deployed 1,127 cleanliness marshals to monitor civic sanitation, and they have collected about Rs 2.2 crore in administrative charges through their enforcement activities.Under the campaign, authorities have collected 16,702.2kg of single-use plastic. The drive follows the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which came into force on April 1 and replaced the 2016 rules. The new rules require segregating waste into four categories: wet, dry, sanitary, and special-care waste. They also place greater responsibility on bulk waste generators such as large residential complexes, hotels, institutions and offices. The state identified 165 legacy waste dump sites containing 245.8 lakh metric tonnes of waste for scientific disposal. Govt said the disposal work has been completed. It is also strengthening monitoring through cleanliness marshals, flying squads, and daily reporting on the Swachhata Samiksha Kendra portal.Between Oct 2 and 26, authorities received 6,755 sanitation-related complaints, resolved 6,464, and left 291 pending. The campaign also aims to increase accountability among elected representatives, with mayors and municipal presidents asked to serve as “lead facilitators” and conduct at least one field visit a day.
