Ludhiana: In a bid to tackle chronic waterlogging and strengthen sewer infrastructure in the Chandigarh Road belt, the Ludhiana municipal corporation has begun work on a Rs 4 crore sludge sewer project along Tajpur Road. The 39-inch sewer line will be laid from Chandigarh Road to Tajpur Road via the road adjoining Vardhman Mills and is expected to benefit several densely populated areas, including Sector 32-A, Sector 33, Sanjay Gandhi Colony and EWS Colony.Officials said the sewer line will extend up to the police post near Central Jail, from where sewage will be channelled directly to the Jamalpur sewage treatment plant (STP). At present, sewage from these areas reaches the STP through the Moti Nagar network, a longer route that residents say is prone to blockages, particularly during the monsoon.MC officials said the new line would provide a shorter and more efficient route for sewage flow, helping streamline the network and improve drainage during the rainy season.Residents of the area have long complained of sewer overflows and waterlogging, expressing hope that the project will bring lasting relief.Mayor Inderjit Kaur said the civic body was undertaking multiple measures to strengthen the city’s sewer infrastructure and prevent water accumulation on Chandigarh Road and adjoining areas. She added that extensive desilting of sewer lines was under way and officials had been instructed to ensure regular cleaning of road gullies ahead of the monsoon.Box: Project SnapshotCost: ₹4 croreSewer size: 39-inch sludge sewerRoute: Chandigarh Road-Tajpur Road via Vardhman Mills roadEndpoint: Near Central Jail police post, linked to Jamalpur STPKey beneficiaries: Sector 32-A, Sector 33, Sanjay Gandhi Colony, EWS ColonyObjective: Reduce waterlogging and improve sewage flow
