Ahmedabad: A 32-year-old woman from Bopal has accused her husband living in Canada and his family of demanding money for IELTS coaching and her migration expenses as dowry before abandoning her and sending her back to India.The woman on Saturday filed a complaint with the Women Police (Rural), alleging years of physical, mental and financial harassment in India and Canada.According to the FIR, the woman married the NRI in Jan 2023 and moved to her matrimonial home in Anand. She alleged that despite her family giving gold jewellery, cash and other customary gifts, her in-laws expressed dissatisfaction from the first day of the marriage.The woman alleged that whenever she asked to be taken to Canada to be with her husband, she was told that she first needed IELTS coaching and that her parents’ should bear the Rs 10 lakh cost. She told police that her father paid for the coaching yet was repeatedly asked to arrange more money for immigration expenses and later, to buy a house in Canada.The woman further alleged that her in-laws forced her to prematurely encash her fixed deposit of Rs 10 lakh and used the money for the family’s business. She stated her parents paid over Rs 20 lakh in cash in instalments in an attempt to save her marriage.She was eventually taken to Canada in June 2024, but alleged that the harassment continued there. Her husband ridiculed her over her English, assaulted her on several occasions, and told her he wanted to marry someone else. She also alleged that she discovered he was in a relationship.When her parents approached the family for reconciliation, they were allegedly asked to pay Rs 50,000 a month towards rent and Rs 1.5 crore to help buy a house in Canada if they wanted their daughter to live there.In Oct 2024, her husband forced her onto a flight to India without allowing her to contact her parents or collect her belongings. After returning, she claimed her in-laws kept her Aadhaar card, PAN card, bank documents and other personal records, and threatened her with consequences if she pursued the matter.After mediation attempts failed, the woman approached the Women Police (Rural), which registered a case against her husband and his family.
