Varanasi: To find a permanent solution to the decades old traffic problem at Pandeypur crossing, one of the busiest in the city, a major exercise began on Sunday.Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, along with a team of engineers of PWD and Varanasi Municipal Corporation, studied the area by camping there for hours on Sunday. Nagpal issued several important directions on the spot to make traffic movement smoother and directed removal of the divider near the intersection. In view of the congestion caused by auto drivers, a separate space (auto stand) was marked to park autos in order to reduce congestion on the road.Nagpal also discussed plan for the proposed revamp and beautification of Pandeypur crossing and directed VMC’s chief engineer Suresh Chandra to discuss a plan with architect Aftab, PWD and traffic department so that work could be expedited.Councillors Madan Mohan Dubey and Ashok Kumar Maurya, along with nagar nigam executive engineer M K Singh and PWD engineers were present during the inspection.There have been many experiments for managing traffic on Pandeypur crossing in past decades and a flyover was built after 2008, but none of the measures brought any relief to commuters.
