Jaisalmer: A crude oil leak from a Vedanta Cairn Oil & Gas pipeline spread across nearly 500 metres of farmland near Bothiya village in Rajasthan’s Barmer district Sunday morning, damaging fields owned by local farmers.The pipeline, which runs from Bhagyam Well Pad-12 to the Mother Well Pad near Bothiya, was shut down after farmers reported the leak. Engineers and company officials rushed to the site, but crude oil remaining inside the line continued to seep into the fields in small quantities.

The spill affected agricultural land owned by farmers Daulat Ram, Premaram and Fakiraram. A significant quantity of crude accumulated in one section of the fields.Company teams excavated a pit using a JCB machine to contain the oil and prevent it from spreading further. Tankers were deployed to remove the collected crude for safe disposal.Farmer Daulat Ram said the leak severely damaged one of his fields. His family owns nearly 100 bighas of agricultural land, but the contaminated portion had suffered extensive damage due to the spill, he said.

A Vedanta Cairn Oil & Gas official in Barmer confirmed the incident and said experts reached the site soon after receiving information. The official said supply through the pipeline had been suspended, while specialists were trying to locate the exact leakage point and determine the cause.In an official statement that followed the incident, the company said, “On July 5, 2026, a liquid leak occurred near a well-pad site in Bhagyam, Rajasthan. Our operations team responded promptly to confine it to a limited area. We are continuously monitoring the site and have taken all necessary containment measures to prevent spread and mitigate any potential impact. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of the community and the environment.”This is the second such incident in the area this year. On Feb 23, crude oil leaked into a field near Aishwarya Well Pad-08 in the Kavas area of Barmer, spreading across nearly four bighas of farmland. The company took about five days to fully stop that leak.
