Gorakhpur: Students of the Fatima Institute of Medical Sciences (FIMS) played a key role in the successful implementation of the Pulse Polio campaign across Gorakhpur, helping health authorities expand immunisation coverage among children in vulnerable localities. The week-long campaign, conducted from June 27 to July 3, was organised under the guidance of WHO surveillance medical officer Vinay Shankar and additional chief medical officer (Immunisation) N.L. Kushwaha. The initiative aimed to strengthen polio immunisation services and ensure that children in high-priority areas received the vaccine. Before being deployed, FIMS organised a comprehensive orientation programme to train students in community outreach, vaccination awareness and immunisation procedures, said director Fr Santosh Sebastian.A total of 48 students, working in two shifts, were deployed across several localities, including Railway Station, Railway Dairy Colony, Bichhiya Colony, Jatepur Colony, Sai Dham Colony and Balia Colony. The teams conducted door-to-door visits, administered polio drops to eligible children and educated parents about the importance of timely immunisation to prevent polio.
