Bedside CT scan, X-ray services at KGMU trauma centre

Lucknow: To improve care for critically ill patients, particularly accident victims, KGMU is set to introduce bedside CT scan and X-ray services at its trauma centre. Portable CT and X-ray machines will be installed in the casualty wing by July. The project, costing around Rs 8 crore, is expected to benefit nearly 150 patients daily. At present, patients are shifted from emergency to the radiology gallery for imaging, which can delay diagnosis and increase risk. With portable machines, scans will be done at the bedside, reducing movement and saving time. The facility will benefit accident victims, head injury patients and those on ventilator support. Chief medical superintendent, trauma centre, Prof Prem Raj Singh said, “In trauma care, every minute is critical. Bedside CT and X-ray will help faster decisions and early treatment.”He said portable CT machines use the same technology as conventional scanners but are mobile. “They provide quality images, and radiation is controlled through safety systems and shielding,” he said.Doctors said radiation exposure is kept low through controlled doses and standard safety protocols. Portable X-ray machines also use lower, targeted doses. He also informed that ICU beds in its trauma emergency unit will increase. Beds in the unit on the third floor will rise from eight to 28.Vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand said the upgrades will reduce delays, lower transfer risks and strengthen trauma care.Once operational, the facilities are expected to improve emergency response and survival in critical cases.
