Hyderabad: Addicted to online gambling, a 21-year-old debt-burdened degree student robbed a 55-year-old woman and pushed her into an agricultural well in Karimnagar. The woman, who knew swimming, miraculously survived by holding onto a motor pipe for 21 hours before she was spotted by farmers. On her statement, police arrested the accused on Saturday and recovered the stolen gold.On July 1, the victim, G Lakshmi from Karimnagar, went to the labour adda near Tower Circle in the town looking for work. The accused, D Dinesh Reddy, a second-year degree student from Gollapalli village in Karimnagar, approached the victim and hired her for work.

He took the victim on a Rapido bike till Thimmapur and from there, took her to Nustulapur village on his own bike, which was 15 kilometres away from the town, saying she had to work there in the fields. Once they reached an isolated place, the accused assaulted the victim and robbed her of five grams of gold and 20 grams of silver jewellery. “After the robbery, he pushed the victim into an agricultural well in the fields. From 10.30 am on July 1 till 7.30 am the next day, she survived in the well by holding on to a rope and a pipe as she also knows swimming. Later, farmers saw and rescued her,” Karimnagar commissioner Gaush Alam said.On the victim’s statement, police verified the CCTV footage in the town, analysed the phone data and arrested Dinesh Reddy on Saturday. “The accused has become addicted to online gambling and lost ₹4 lakh. He borrowed money through loan apps and to get out of debts, devised a robbery plan,” the commissioner said.On the confession of the accused, police recovered the stolen gold from a jeweller in Karimnagar and the rest of the valuables from his possession.
