800 to take test for 400 govt primary teacher vacancies

Panaji: The Goa Staff Selection Commission has announced that it will conduct a test for close to 800 shortlisted candidates for the posts of nearly 400 govt primary school teachers. The vacancies had been advertised earlier this year calling for applications, and now, a computer-based test will be conducted for the posts on May 10, which is a Sunday.There are 352 posts of Marathi medium and 38 posts of Konkani medium govt primary school teachers to be filled. The commission has made a list of 665 candidates for Marathi teacher posts and 100 candidates for Konkani teacher posts for the computer-based test based on eligibility.Govt primary schools in Goa are in a state of crisis, with five to 10 shutting down each year for want of students, while many teacher posts remain vacant, making it a vicious cycle.Chief minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio, has been promising to fill these vacant posts to revive the govt primary school sector again. Around 300 of 689 govt primary schools are running as single-teacher schools. Single-teacher schools involve just one teacher instructing students from Classes I to VI.
