2 men robbed of 600g of gold near Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: Two persons were allegedly robbed of 600g of gold worth Rs 64 lakh by men impersonating police officials close to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on the morning of June 27. A complaint was registered on with Airport police on Wednesday night by Junaid Arif, a rice mill trader from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district. According to him, the gold was expected to arrive from Dubai as part of a business deal arranged through a person he identified as Arbaaz, a Godhra resident.Arif told police he had been doing business with Arbaaz for some time, initially involving garments sourced from Dubai and delivered at Delhi through intermediaries, with payments made in cash.According to the complaint, on June 23, when Arif was in Delhi, Arbaaz allegedly proposed that he shift to gold trading, claiming it offered high returns. Arif then requested 600g of gold to be sent and asked two relatives — Harish and Avesh — to collect it from the Ahmedabad airport.A man named Anwar was to hand over the gold at around 5am. “At around 7am, the relatives informed they had received the gold. The men were walking out and were approaching the intersection leading to the domestic and international terminals when they allegedly noticed they were being followed by a woman and two unknown men,” the complainant told police. A white vehicle stopped in front of them and the two were allegedly forced into it. Two men inside the vehicle, claiming to be police officers, allegedly assaulted Harish and took the gold from his trouser pocket before dropping both men off near Apollo Circle. A second car allegedly followed them with the woman inside.Arif told police the bill for the gold was not available. Police are probing the communication trail, including calls and WhatsApp messages, mentioned in the complaint alleging kidnapping, wrongful confinement, robbery and impersonation of a public servant.
