Pune: A 76-year-old man, who retired as a scientist from a central govt organization, was duped of Rs 23.59 lakh after cybercrooks posed as officials from his bank and offered services particularly designed for the benefits of senior citizens.The fraud took place between May 5 and 6. The man, however, lodged a complaint with the Chatushrungi police recently.Inspector Shital Jadhav of the Chatushrungi police said, “The suspects called the complainant, a resident of Ganeshkhind Road, posing as officials from a public sector bank. The complainant held an account with the same bank.”“Cybercrooks informed him about various online services offered by the bank, particularly the ones meant for senior citizens and other benefits available to customers,” Jadhav said.“This was done to win the complainant’s confidence. The conmen then asked him to download the bank’s mobile application, claiming that it would make his banking transactions easier,” she added.“They shared a link with the complainant. The elderly man clicked on it. The link opened an online form, which prompted the complainant to fill his banking credentials. It was remote access software,” Jadhav said.“He filled in the details. He also shared the PIN generated by the remote access software with the fraudsters. They gained control of his cellphone and carried out unauthorised transactions using the complainant’s e-banking facilities,” she said.
