46 killed in road accidents in first 6 months
Pedestrians & Bikers Top Fatalities; Speeding, Drink Driving Main Causes

Chandigarh: The city witnessed a total of 96 road accidents including 42 fatal accidents in which 46 people lost their lives in six months of this year. Police data shows 78 people were injured in 54 non-fatal accidents. However, In 2025, 45 people died in 43 fatal road accidents in the first six months.As per traffic police data, six women and three minors were among the 46 fatalities. However, 20 women were among the 78 injured in road accidents this year while 65 people were injured in 51 road accidents in the same period in 2025.Data reveals the maximum people 23 were killed while riding on two wheelers and the disturbing figure of killing of pedestrians in the road accidents. Data shows 14 pedestrians were killed while crossing roads in the different parts of the city.Despite having over 200 kilometres of dedicated cycle tracks in the city , five cyclists were also killed in road accidents between Jan 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026.Three people were killed while travelling on e-rickshaw and only one person was killed in a road accident while riding in a car in six months of this year.Police investigation revealed that the main cause of most of the fatal road accidents was speeding. In many cases, vehicle drivers were also found under the influence of intoxication.Over Speed Detection Systems (OSDS) are already installed in the city, which issued challans to overspeeding vehicles. Despite this, fatal accidents were not fully controlled.Last year, 86 people lost their lives in road accidents; however, 81 deaths were reported in road accidents in 2024. In 2023, 67 were killed in road accidents in the city.The city reduced the number of black spots to 3. Earlier, the city had 5 black spots. At present, the city has 3 black spots: Airport Light Point, Poultry Farm Chowk, and Kalagram light point.
