Jaipur: The Rajasthan transport department has sought a two-month extension from the Centre for mandatory installation of vehicle location tracking devices (VLTDs) in commercial vehicles, citing inadequate installation capacity and a large backlog across the state. The department has written to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, stating that many commercial vehicles are yet to install and activate VLTDs, affecting the renewal of permits and other transport-related approvals.Officials said immediate enforcement of the rules is not feasible as the number of authorised installation agencies is insufficient to cater to the volume of vehicles awaiting compliance.“The state govt is committed to implementing the VLTD system and complying with all prescribed procedures. However, immediate enforcement is practically difficult due to the limited capacity of authorised agencies, the large backlog of vehicles and the time required for technical stabilisation of the system,” said senior transport department official. The department has assured the Centre that it remains committed to implementing the system and is taking steps to strengthen the rollout.Officials said guidelines for implementation within the state are being finalised and are expected to be issued in the coming weeks. These will facilitate the empanelment of more authorised centres for installing VLTDs, helping clear the backlog faster. The VLTD system is aimed at improving real-time tracking, monitoring and safety of commercial vehicles. Transport officials said expanding the installation network will ensure smoother implementation of the mandate while minimising disruption to vehicle owners seeking permit renewals.
