Chennai: Chennai: A magistrate court in Alandur on Tuesday sentenced four men from Uttar Pradesh to six years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹80,000 each for breaking into a foreign currency exchange office in Manapakkam and stealing cash. The verdict was delivered within five months of the offence.The case arose from a complaint filed by Joseph Dominic, 38, who operated a foreign currency exchange office on Parthasarathy Street, Manapakkam. He told police that after locking his office on the night of Jan 7, he returned the following morning to find the shutter lock broken and ₹25,000 in cash missing.Based on the complaint, the Nandambakkam police registered a case and launched an investigation. CCTV footage revealed that four men arrived in an autorickshaw, forced open the shutter and stole the cash.Following the investigation, a police team travelled to Surat in Gujarat, where, with the assistance of the local police, they arrested Riku Amarsingh Chauhan, 27, Jugendra Singh, 19, Abhishek Singh, 20, and Yogesh Kumar, 32, on Jan 12, 2026. The accused, all natives of Uttar Pradesh, were brought to Chennai and remanded in judicial custody.Police recovered the stolen ₹25,000 and seized three mobile phones from the accused. Investigators also found that Riku Amarsingh Chauhan had 13 previous theft and burglary cases registered against him in Uttar Pradesh.After completing the investigation, the Nandambakkam Police filed the final report before the Alandur Judicial Magistrate Court and ensured the examination of witnesses during the trial.The court found all four accused guilty, sentenced each of them to six years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹80,000. The court also ordered an additional six months of imprisonment in default of payment of the fine.
