New Delhi: The Centre has accepted Delhi govt’s request to restart wheat procurement in the capital through Food Corporation of India (FCI) after a gap of four years. This is expected to strengthen the local agricultural ecosystem by ensuring that farmers receive the minimum support price for their produce.Procurement will commence from April 24 at the FCI depot in Narela and the Najafgarh mandi.Chief minister Rekha Gupta said, “This is an important step in prioritising farmers’ interests. With coordinated efforts between the Centre and Delhi govt, farmers in the capital will be able to secure fair value for their produce and become more economically empowered”.The development follows a recent letter by Gupta to Union consumer affairs, food and public distribution minister Pralhad Joshi. In her communication, CM flagged that the absence of local procurement was forcing farmers to sell below MSP, adversely impacting their incomes.
