Ajnala: An Ajnala youth who had gone to Slovakia on a work permit eight months ago in search of better employment opportunities drowned there, leaving his family devastated. The family has now appealed to the Centre, Punjab govt and the Indian embassy there to expedite the repatriation of his body.Gursewak Singh (24), a resident of Wanjawala village near Ajnala, had travelled abroad to support his family financially. His death has cast a pall of gloom over the village, even as the family was preparing for the wedding of his elder brother on Dec 31.According to the family, Gursewak spoke to his mother on Saturday night after completing a 12-hour shift. Telling her he was too tired to cook, he said he would have dinner outside and call again later. Hours later, his friends informed the family that he had drowned.His father, Sartaj Singh, said the family had taken a loan to send Gursewak abroad and had repaid only the first instalment. He appealed to the authorities to help bring his son’s mortal remains home so the family could perform his last rites in their native village according to Sikh traditions.
