Cow smuggler arrested after encounter in Jaunpur

Varanasi: A miscreant wanted in cow smuggling case in Deoria district was arrested after an encounter with Jaunpur police in Sarpatahan police station area on Monday.He was shot in his left leg during exchange of fire and was sent to CHC Suithakala for treatment. The police seized a .315 bore country-made pistol, one live cartridge, two empty cartridges, a mobile phone and a stolen motorcycle from his possession. One bullet passed near the right ear of station house officer Yajuvendra Kumar Singh.According to the police, during vehicle checking near Kammarpur culvert, a suspicious bike rider tried to flee on seeing the police. In haste, his bike overturned. He fired twice at the police with a country-made pistol and ran. In retaliatory firing he got injured and as arrested.In the retaliatory firing done in self-defence, the criminal was injured. The arrested person was identified as Pankaj Yadav (35), resident of Sari Barauna, police station Sarpatahan.During interrogation, Pankaj said that he had stolen the bike from Akhandnagar area and was using it after changing its number plate. According to the police, several cases are registered against the accused in Jaunpur, Deoria and Gonda under the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act, Gangsters Act, robbery, Arms Act, among others. A new case has been registered against him at Sarpatahan police station under various sections of the BNS and the Arms Act, and legal action is being taken.
