Lucknow: UP Congress on Monday pointed out the alleged inconsistencies in the Union govt’s stance on the implementation of the women’s reservation bill.Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai said, “While Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier congratulated opposition parties in 2023 for the passage of the bill, in 2026, he blamed the Congress for its non-implementation. These differing positions reflect confusion in the govt’s approach.”He further claimed that the govt linked the implementation of women’s reservation to census and delimitation processes, which he described as a deliberate move to delay its rollout.According to Rai, opposition parties opposed this linkage, calling it against democratic and constitutional principles.Rai said that at the time of the bill’s passage in 2023, the Congress demanded its immediate implementation. He added that the govt instead cited procedural requirements such as census and delimitation as reasons for the delay.Referring to the party’s 2024 Lok Sabha election manifesto, he said the Congress committed to implementing the constitutional amendment on women’s reservation without delay if elected to power.Highlighting the party’s record, Rai said the Congress has historically supported women’s leadership, citing examples of women leaders who have held key positions in the country.
