Sprinklers, khas mats & diet checks to keep it cool for zoo animals

Lucknow: In view of the severe hot conditions, the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden has taken measures to protect animals from heat stress and ensure their well-being.Sprinkler systems have been set up in the enclosures of deer, tigers and giraffes to help them soak in water and provide relief during the day. About 50 coolers have been installed in various enclosures, officials said.Khas and bamboo mats have been installed in bird enclosures to shield them from extreme heat, while green curtains have also been put up in several sections of the zoo.Ponds in enclosures, especially those housing ducks and pelicans, have been renovated so that the birds can cool off and swim at intervals.Zoo director, Sanjay Biswal said dietary changes have also been introduced as part of the summer management plan.“The intake of carnivorous animals has been reduced by around 10% to prevent metabolic stress during extreme heat. In contrast, herbivores are being provided with an increased quantity of juicy fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, melon, cucumber and leafy greens, which help maintain hydration levels naturally,” he said.Salt licks have been placed across enclosures to provide essential minerals and help maintain electrolyte balance during hot weather, Biswal added.
