Kolkata Family Donates Organs, Saves Lives Across Multiple Hospitals

Kolkata: The family of 72-year-old Kamalendu Chowdhury, who was declared brain dead at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, has given a new lease of life and sight to multiple patients through organ donation. Following the family’s consent, a swift final allocation of his organs was co-ordinated on Saturday evening. This is the fifth organ donation in the city this year.According to officials, Chowdhury’s blood group was O-positive. Under the final allocation protocol, his liver is being transplanted into a recipient at Apollo Hospital itself. While one of his kidneys has been sent to the Command Hospital, the other allocated to the Kolkata Kidney Institute (KKI). His corneas have been allocated to Disha Eye Hospitals. A green corridor was created by Kolkata Police, where necessary, to ensure the organs reached destinations across the city without any delay.
