Amritsar: The Akal Takht secretariat on Thursday said it had asked all Sikh MLAs and ministers in the Punjab govt to appear before it on June 29 for discussions on the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. However, chief minister Bhagwant Mann later said in Mohali that it would be for the Punjab legislative assembly committee to decide whether the MLAs should appear before the Akal Takht.Earlier, a statement issued by the secretariat claimed that the law was passed by the Punjab govt in April without consultation with, or the consent of, the Akal Takht, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Guru Khalsa Panth.Akal Takht secretariat in-charge Bagicha Singh said letters were emailed and sent via WhatsApp to Sikh MLAs and ministers on June 17 and 18 using the contact details available on the official website of the Punjab legislative assembly. He said the secretariat also contacted them over the phone and sent a letter to assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on June 23.The MLAs and ministers have been asked to reach the Akal Takht at 11am on June 29 on the directions of officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj to deliberate on the amendment and present their views. Non-Sikh ministers have been asked to submit their views in writing before June 29.He said officials of the secretariat have also contacted all MLAs and ministers through phone calls on their contact numbers to inform them that official letters had been sent to them.
