GURGAON: A fire broke out at the Bandhwari landfill on Thursday morning, marking the second such incident at the landfill site since the onset of summer . The blaze was reported at around 7:30 am in the front section of the landfill where fresh waste is dumped. The fire department deployed four fire tenders to the site, while officials said one fire tender was already stationed at the landfill under existing preparedness arrangements.Officials said that the situation was brought under control. “We received the first call at 7:30 am and have sent around four fire brigades till now. Since no new requirement has arisen, it is under control now,” said Mam Chand, senior fire safety officer. An MCG engineer present at the site also said the fire had been contained. However, Thursday’s incident comes barely two months after a major fire at the landfill in April that burned for nearly 50 hours, triggering concerns over environmental and public health impacts in nearby areas. The recurrence of a fire despite heightened surveillance measures has put the spotlight back on the landfill’s vulnerability. Following the April blaze, MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya had ordered a stringent monitoring mechanism, including round-the-clock deployment of engineering staff, regular inspections of fire-prone zones, and continuous oversight by senior officers.Under the arrangement, assistant engineers and junior engineers were assigned in three shifts to ensure 24-hour vigilance at the site. Officials were also directed to remain physically present during duty hours and ensure that firefighting equipment, including water tankers and emergency response systems, remained operational at all times. The measures mirrored a similar response adopted after another major fire at the landfill in April 2025, suggesting that repeated incidents have continued to challenge authorities despite successive rounds of corrective action.
