Animal activists rescue soot‑covered cats, frightened dogs

TNNLucknow: Animal activists continued to rescue pets which were in the veterinary clinic in the ill-fated building where the fire broke out. The activists, who started rescuing pets on Monday, took out all the remaining cats, dogs and birds on Tuesday. Cats huddled in trays and cages, their fur singed black by soot; frightened dogs whined; a lone parrot clung to its perch.Animal welfare volunteers administered first-aid to pets which suffered burns, smoke inhalation and severe stress. Many stayed throughout the night, coordinating rescues and arranging shelter.Renu Singh rescued 12 cats and eight dogs, five of them injured. Charu Khare, who has worked with strays for six years, helped rescue cats from the basement. “I am treating a few of them. The pet clinic ran round the clock and often provided free treatment to strays,” she said.Rahul Verma, in animal care since 2011, spent four hours at the site. “Several animals needed urgent care. I assisted with first aid,” he said, adding the clinic was a known refuge for injured animals.Animal activist Divyansh Pathak reached around 3pm on Monday and stayed till 4am Tuesday. A seven-member team from Jeev Aashraya rescued eight cats, seven dogs and a parrot, shifting them to a Gomti Nagar shelter, said Shubham Pratap Singh.
