Newly-weds die by suicide amid harassment allegations

Times News NetworkLudhiana: A newly-married couple ended their lives within 24 hours of each other, allegedly due to harassment and blackmail by a woman.The deceased have been identified as Gurkaramdeep Singh (34), an architect, and his wife Jasmine Nagra, residents of Boothgarh village. The couple had tied the knot barely four months ago. Police said Gurkaramdeep consumed poison on Sunday, while Jasmine, devastated by her husband’s death, took the same step on Monday before his cremation.According to inspector Sandeep Kumar, the Sadar Khanna police have registered a case against Navjot Kaur, a married woman from the same village, on charges of abetment to suicide. She allegedly had an affair with Gurkaramdeep before his marriage and was later allegedly blackmailing him for money.In her complaint, Gurkaramdeep’s mother Chhindarpal Kaur said that her son severed ties with Navjot after his marriage. However, Navjot allegedly continued to harass him, pressuring him for money and threatening to implicate him in a rape case to ruin his married life. Chhindarpal said her son had confided in the family about the harassment before taking the extreme step.The double suicide has left the village stunned. Locals said Jasmine’s decision to end her life reflected the unbearable grief she faced after losing her husband so suddenly.Chhindarpal, who works as a Class IV employee in a govt school, said she had already lost her husband years ago and was given the job on humanitarian grounds. “Now I have lost my son and daughter-in-law too,” she said, breaking down.Police confirmed that a case had been registered under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Navjot Kaur, who is currently at large.
