Ahmedabad: A high-speed hit-and-run accident in Nikol left an autorickshaw driver critically injured after a BMW electric vehicle rammed his rickshaw and crashed into an AMTS bus stand near Bhakti Circle on Monday afternoon.Police said the BMW EV was being driven at a very high speed when it hit the autorickshaw. The impact was so intense that the rickshaw overturned and was hurled a long distance. The car failed to halt and went on to crash into the nearby bus stand, inflicting extensive structural damage. CCTV footage of the accident has emerged, showing the speeding car moments before it rammed the rickshaw and smashed into the bus stop. Parts of the AMTS bus stand collapsed due to the force of the collision. The luxury vehicle, valued at over Rs 2 crore, also sustained severe damage. The injured rickshaw driver suffered serious head and bodily injuries and was rushed to a hospital. Police said his condition continues to be critical. Eyewitnesses said that soon after the crash, the BMW driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. He was reportedly assisted by another man on a motorcycle who helped him escape. Initial investigation found that the car is registered in Maharashtra and is owned by a company. Officials said the vehicle was being used as a demo car. Personnel from the I Division traffic police reached the site and launched an investigation. “One team has gone to the hospital to record the victim’s statement, while another team is trying to identify and track the accused,” a police officer said. Police said further action would be initiated once the driver is traced.
