UP Police job scam: Basti aspirant’s dad loses Rs 48L

Lucknow: In a suspected recruitment scam linked to the UP Police constable exam in Basti, a man was duped of Rs 48 lakh by three men who promised his daughter a job and later used fabricated Supreme Court documents to extort money.In FIR filed at Kaptainganj police station, Bajrangi Lal Maurya, resident of Mahulani Buzurg, accused Ibrahim of Madanpura village and his sons, Sonu and Sahil, of cheating, criminal intimidation and conspiracy.Maurya said his daughter appeared in UP Police constable recruitment exam notified in 2023. The Feb 2024 test was cancelled and reconducted on Aug 30, 2024. Ibrahim claimed he had “high-level connections” and could secure govt job for Maurya’s daughter in exchange for money. Maurya said he sold part of his agricultural land and paid Rs 8 lakh in cash to Ibrahim, but when his daughter failed to make it to the final list, he approached the accused seeking a refund.Ibrahim allegedly produced what he claimed was a Supreme Court warrant, saying and Maurya’s daughter and son had been named in the paper leak case and could face life imprisonment. On pretext of helping, Ibrahim who took Maurya to Delhi, where, Maurya alleged, he was shown documents bearing morphed photographs of his children along with purported legal papers. Being illiterate, he relied on the accused’s claims that costly legal intervention in the Supreme Court was needed to “save” his children. He was allegedly told to pay Rs 40 lakh.Maurya paid Rs 20 lakh in instalments and said two unidentified men visited his home to escalate pressure, prompting him to pay another Rs 8 lakh. In total, Rs 48 lakh was extorted through threats and forged documents. Maurya says he has audio recordings to support his claims.On Jun 3, when Maurya and his daughter confronted Ibrahim and demanded their money back, they were abused and threatened with false cases.Police registered FIR under relevant sections of BNS, including cheating, criminal intimidation and conspiracy. “The allegations are being probed. Documents, electronic evidence and financial transactions are under scrutiny,” said Alok Srivastava, Station Officer, Kaptanganj police station.
