Gurgaon: Traffic police challaned 4,417 vehicles for operating without High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) or without number plates between June 1 and June 17, collecting over Rs 25 lakh in fines.Police said the drive is aimed at improving vehicle identification and aiding crime detection, as offenders often use fake or missing number plates to evade law enforcement. Officials added that wider adoption of HSRP plates enhances public safety and makes it easier to detect and take action against violators.The enforcement drive is part of a broader effort to improve traffic management and ensure compliance with road safety regulations. Authorities have urged vehicle owners to install HSRP plates at the earliest and warned that strict action against violators will continue.“We urge all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are fitted with HSRP number plates and to refrain from driving vehicles without them. Our campaign to identify offenders will continue,” DCP Traffic Prateek Gahlot said.In a separate drive conducted between June 3 and June 17, cops issued 9,057 challans for lane-driving violations, collecting fines totalling more than Rs 63 lakh.Police said motorists driving in incorrect lanes or changing lanes abruptly are a major cause of road accidents and traffic congestion. Ahead of the enforcement drive, awareness programmes were conducted for truck operators, bus drivers, school bus drivers, autorickshaw drivers and drivers employed by various companies to promote lane discipline.Four police cars and eight bikes equipped with mikes and speakers were deployed on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway to alert people and direct them not to change their lane to avoid legal action, decongesting the national highway by streamlining the traffic flow.“150 cops were deployed specially for awareness purposes and telling commuters on the road to drive in their lane. After Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, the same practice will be conducted at SPR, KMP, Dwarka Expressway, besides other key stretches,” a police officer said.Officials said both enforcement drives are intended to make roads safer, improve traffic flow and strengthen compliance with traffic regulations across the district.
