Ahmedabad: A Gandhinagar woman has accused a man she met through a matrimonial website of concealing his identity, luring her into a relationship on the promise of marriage and later blackmailing her with their private photographs and videos. The complaint, registered with the Women’s Police (West), was the second FIR of a similar nature lodged against the accused within three days.According to police, the complainant, who runs a juice centre in Gandhinagar and lives with her son, created a profile on a matrimonial platform in 2023 after separating from her husband several years ago. In July that year, she received a request from a man identifying himself as “Aditya Patel”.The FIR states that during their conversations, the man claimed to be a widower living in Ahmedabad and operating a manufacturing business in Chhatral. The two remained in contact through phone calls and WhatsApp messages and met several times in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. The woman alleged that he repeatedly assured her that he would marry her despite possible opposition from his family, leading her to trust him and enter into a relationship.However, the complainant told police that she later became suspicious after noticing documents bearing different names. When she questioned him, the man allegedly claimed the documents belonged to an employee and shared copies of Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, passport and other documents identifying him as “Aditya Patel”.According to the FIR, her doubts resurfaced after she traced a phone number saved on his mobile phone and visited a residence in Kadi. There, she allegedly discovered that the man was allegedly Karim Sipai and not Aditya Patel as he had represented himself.The woman alleged that she subsequently severed ties with him. Following this, the accused allegedly began demanding money and threatening to circulate their photographs and intimate video clips if she revealed his true identity. Fearing social stigma, she allegedly paid him around Rs 15,000 over time.She further alleged that the accused continued to contact her using multiple phone numbers and created fake social media profiles resembling her accounts to send objectionable messages to people known to her.The complainant told police that she decided to approach authorities after learning through media reports that similar allegations had been made against the accused by another woman. Police have registered a case of cheating, criminal intimidation, impersonation and cyber harassment and have launched an investigation.
