Gun jam foils murder bid; two held after shootout in Chhawla

New Delhi: Two men accused of attempting to kill a man in southwest Delhi’s Chhawla area were arrested a day after the attack, in which the firearm failed to go off, narrowly preventing a fatal shooting.The incident took place on April 17 in Shyam Vihar Phase 2. According to police, two armed assailants arrived on a motorcycle and targeted the complainant. One of them, later identified as Rocky, attempted to fire at the man at point-blank range. However, the pistol malfunctioned at the moment, allowing the intended victim to escape without injury. A case was registered the next day under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.DCP (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh said, “Acting on specific inputs, a team tracked the suspects and intercepted them near the Urban Extension Road at around 5.35am on Sunday. Rocky was riding pillion while his associate, Sumit, 24, was driving the motorcycle. When the team signalled them to stop and surrender, Rocky opened fire, discharging three rounds. The police team returned fire, firing three rounds and hitting Rocky below the left knee. He was overpowered after a brief scuffle, while Sumit was apprehended on the spot.”Police said Sumit was found carrying a loaded country-made firearm and a live cartridge.During the operation, police seized a 7.65 mm pistol with two live cartridges and three spent shells, along with another country-made weapon. The motorcycle used in the crime was also seized.The injured accused was taken to the hospital. Police have registered another case in connection with the firing on the police team.
