Mohali: The Mohali traffic police under Zirakpur police station have launched a special enforcement drive against wrong-side driving and overloaded auto-rickshaws, issuing challans to 44 violators over the past 48 hours. The crackdown was initiated following repeated complaints from residents regarding traffic rule violations, particularly by auto-rickshaw drivers. Police officials said wrong-side driving and overloading of passenger vehicles have emerged as major safety hazards on Zirakpur’s busy roads, often leading to congestion and increasing the risk of accidents.Zirakpur Traffic In-charge Inspector Sanjeev Kumar said the police had received numerous complaints from the residents about auto-rickshaw drivers driving on the wrong side of roads and carrying passengers beyond the permissible limits.“We have been receiving several complaints against auto drivers for wrong-side driving and overloading. During the special drive, around 44 violators, including auto-rickshaw drivers and other motorists, were challaned. This campaign will continue so that such violations are discouraged, and road discipline is maintained,” he said. The police action has been welcomed by residents and commuters, many of whom said such violations had become routine and posed a serious threat to public safety.Residents have also urged the authorities to conduct similar drives in Kharar and Mohali, where traffic violations of a similar nature are frequently reported.Karnail Singh, a resident of Kharar, said wrong-side driving had become a common practice, particularly among auto-rickshaw drivers. “Many auto drivers drive on the wrong side, especially near intersections and turns, while carrying more passengers than permitted. However, the problem is not limited to auto drivers alone. Many other motorists also violate traffic rules, leading to accidents and traffic snarls. Regular enforcement is necessary,” he said.Police officials said the enforcement campaign would continue in the coming days to ensure stricter compliance with traffic regulations and make roads safer for all users.
