Panaji: After the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) operated the material recovery facilities (MRF) at the industrial estate at Margao for over a decade, it has now urged the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to take over the facility to continue its operations, as they have decided to leave the project.The MRF facility is designed to treat around 10 tonnes of dry waste. GWMC managing director Harish Adconkar said that the corporation will appoint a company to run the facility.Adconkar said that the corporation plans to charge the panchayat where the dry waste comes to the facility for the facility’s running cost. Adconkar said that the MRF facility is one of the top facilities in the country, and govt will take over and run the plant.GWMC collects non-biodegradable dry waste from panchayats/local bodies and educational institutions. The collected dry waste is transported to the MRF. The dry waste gets segregated at the MRF, and all valuable recyclables are recovered. The recyclable material could be sold to recyclers, and the non-recyclable, non-biodegradable, combustible dry waste is to be baled, stored and disposed of by GWMC.“WWF has been operating an MRF located at plot no.s 13 and 14 in Margao Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), since June 2024. Whereas WWF has approached GWMC to take over the operation and maintenance of the said MRF,” Adconkar said.GWMC intends to solicit applications from experienced bidders to participate in the submission of an expression of interest for “Operations of Materials Recovery Facility for Dry Waste Treatment and Disposal” at Margao IDC.The corporation will provide a 650sqm shed at Margao IDC. It will provide electricity and water connection for the shed; however, the utility charges will be paid by the selected bidder.GWMC shall transport about 7-10 tonnes of dry waste per day at the shed and provide existing infrastructure and machinery, such as baling machines and forklifts. The bidder has to perform machinery repairs and maintenance till end of the contract period.
